About moving to Canada

My husband and my children moved to Canada two and a half year ago. We live in Saskatchewan, not far from Saskatoon.

My daughter Polina in the sixth grade of the Canadian public school. In school, we were accepted without any tests, medical examinations and other bureaucracy. Polina knew English at a low level when she entered the school. To help her was organized additional individual English classes for free.

About the features of education in Canada.

The school pays much attention to mutual respect and no bullying, and children are taught to mutual aid and tolerance. Because of this she quickly joined and adapted.

The situation at school relaxed, homework is given in case the child missed a lesson or skipped something. Much attention is paid to reading, my daughter began to go to the library herself. What surprised is the freedom of expression. Children are allowed to wear any clothes, dye their hair, nails, do basic makeup. The same applies to teachers.

Also, my daughter and I liked the system of positive motivation: not punishment for failure, but reward for a well-done task.

In our school parents are not gathering together. Each parent is separately assigned an hour to talk with the teacher.

At the big break after eating all children go out into the yard for a walk.

The school has so mastered the life of the child and joins in the trust that sometimes becomes closer than the family. If the child feels offended, the school will question him in detail and notify the relevant structures, will bypass the parents.

Education in Canada is much more effective than in my home country. The amount of information supplied is less, but it is stored and more used in the end.

About moving to Canada

We moved to Canada in July 2016. We live in the small town of Winkler, Manitoba.

In our family there are two schoolchildren: the eldest son goes to the third grade, and the middle went to kindergarten — the introductory class of primary school.

About the features of education in Canada

Primary, secondary and high schools in Canada are separated and located in different areas. The eldest child spends 7 hours at school from 8:40 to 15:40, the middle 3 hours — from 12:40 to 15:40.

In primary school, there are no timetable lessons, but there is the regime, in which they train the certain skill. The school sends out booklets where you can find out what and when children do on which time and learn about how the school works.

Classes are organized in an unusual way: there are many books, legos, educational toys and themed corners where children can play. They sit at tables and on a rug, there is a sofa with pillows for reading, there is a part with computers, a projector and microscopes, a board and posters. All notebooks for classes and textbooks are in school, stationery too. Children use them all together. We pay $30 for this at the beginning of the year and nothing more.

At school, children do many unusual projects: Germinate seeds, grow butterflies, tadpoles and chickens, do experiments. The teachers are friendly, never say a harsh word, never raises the voice.

We don't have homework at school, but the teacher sends books for home reading.

Here the emphasis is on the ability of children to communicate in a team, to perform tasks on their own and something in a team or with a partner. The aim of the teacher is to help the child to master the basic skills, abilities and knowledge and be able to use them in the future. I see children talk a lot and give their assessment of what they are doing.

Sometimes at school, they overdo with «it's OK.» If a child writes incorrectly, he is encouraged, the teacher focuses him on what he does well, but it does not work with all children. Someone thinks that it is okay not to try better. Recently, primary schools in our city refused to teach children capital letters. They write in print. There are times when children finish school without learning to write.

This is only our experience. Canada is huge, regions differ from each other. In general, the school is friendly to children, and they love it. The school collaborates with parents to understand how to help a particular child.

About moving to Canada

We were born and lived in Moldova. Our journey to Canada began in 2011. Then we thought about moving, but it turned out that we lived in St.Petersburg for four years. After accumulating a suitable amount for departure, we found the «program» of the small town Morden, in the province of Manitoba. After reading about the city, we realized that there we would like to live.

About the features of education in Canada

After our arrival, our son Savva entered a local public school in the third grade.

I work for a company that helps immigrants adapt to their new lives. So I know a lot about the educational system.

The organization of children's lives in schools may vary from province to province. But there are similarities. Here children are happy in schools and happily run there! Classes are bright and fun, in some can live pets. Public schools often do not have uniforms. Children do not sit still at their desks, and desks are unarranged in a special order. They can sit in groups of several people. Classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards and tablets. Many tasks are performed on tablets.

If the child does not speak English at all, then he still learns on a par with everyone on the same program, just additionally learns English.

They do not give grades during primary school. Only three times a year issue a report in which a four-point grading system. The report is issued together with the characteristics of the child. This helps to assess the knowledge of children in general, not for a specific project. In the seventh and eighth grade, the system is designed so that children, along with compulsory lessons, choose the further direction of study: cook, electrician, welder or carpenter courses. These courses will give them the necessary points for admission to higher education and a certificate with which they can work after school.

Schools are tax-free.

Respect for the child, appeal to him always in a polite manner, without raising the voice or communication in a condescending tone.

In a comparison of academic knowledge in general, the program is weaker. Probably, it will be possible to give an objective assessment after graduating from school or even university. Another point is the focus on participation, not on results. Also, children are unset up for higher education. If you don't want to, then you don't.

About moving to Canada

Since childhood, I have dreamed of living abroad, and in 2010 we have moved to Canada. After that, we moved every year, lived in different countries and came back here two years ago.

We have three children, one of whom is of school age, a daughter. When we immigrated, she was six years old. Just at this age child here goes to the first class.

About the features of education in Canada

Canadian education is very different from Russian. Here is school worried about to a child is being interested to study.

We go to an ordinary public school. There are also private schools. Complete schooling is divided into primary, secondary and higher education. They are all located in separate buildings. Schools are attached to districts. You can't go to school, not from your district.

The study begins not on the 1st of September, but on the first Tuesday of September. At the same time, a first-grader does not need being elegant and with flowers, it is not a holiday here. The first class here is something between school and kindergarten — there no sharp edges.

There is no sick leave. If your child is sick or doesn't feel well, just call the school and let them know.

Interestingly, the days are counted not by days of the week and the numbers. For example, day one, day two, day three. So, despite the fact that the school year began on Tuesday — it was the first day and it started counting. If Friday, for example, is a day off, then this day is postponed to Monday, so no subject is skipped!

Holidays are in the summer, at Christmas and Easter. But once a month, all Ontario schools have an extra day off on Friday. This is a day for teachers-professional activity day.

In primary school, there is no class attachment to the teacher. My daughter has two teachers. One conducts lessons in the morning, the second after lunch.

Here are not enough places in schools, so almost all schools have additional trailers. In trailers studies certain classes. For example, this year my daughter went to the third grade, and she is in a trailer. Trailers are comfortable, have windows, air conditioning/heater. But there is no toilet, children have to run to the main building. In winter they run even without outdoor clothes.

About moving to Canada

We live in Canada for a year and two months.

About features of education in Canada

Our daughter moved to the fourth grade, and the son went to kindergarten. At first, I didn't like the education system. I could not understand why children are ungiven homework, they constantly play and spend much time on the street. Now we are used to everything. I see this approach is taking place, and perhaps it is even better than in Ukraine.

Here, each school as a separate state. Children go to different schools, and all parents have their own experience. Someone was lucky with school and someone not very.

Each school has its own rating. It is recommended to consider schools with a rating above seven points. In such schools, education is much higher and better. The rating of our school last year was about six points. Despite this, we are happy with the school, the way they teach children.

Ольга 1.jpg

The only thing common to all schools is they are child-oriented, and the priority is the child. No one forces anyone to do anything. Each school has a library, and the child chooses what he likes. No one is forcing you to read and retell works to teach poetry. Here the main thing that the child read.

At the lesson, the child can express his opinion, and if it is different from the opinion of the teacher, the teacher will not argue and insist on his own.

Education in primary school takes place in the format of the game. Children spend much time on the street, no one sits at the desk. The dress is casual. No requirements for the shoes.

In our school, the only task for home is the reading.

Parents can not go inside the school and talk to the teacher, and it is forbidden. In the morning, parents bring their children to school, and children play, after the call, children are built in the line and take turns entering the school. Parents stay or leave. So after lessons, parents are waiting outside, the children come outside himself. If you are interested in something and you want to ask the teacher a question, then write it in a diary. The teacher also writes the answer in the diary.

Ольга 4.jpg

Pupils and teachers work as equals, even the headmaster walks down the hall, stops and jokes with the children. Children can approach him and give high five. It's fun, no fear of the headmaster. At the same time, there is respect for the teacher, discipline at school.

Children with special needs and ordinary children attend the same school and even the same class. To those children, the additional teacher cares for them.

In the schools many interesting days when children can come in pyjamas and in addition to the lessons they are watching cartoons. Kids love it.

Children do not carry home textbooks and notebooks. Everything stays in school.

There is not enough math homework. The school is strong in science, natural science, geography, literature, but my daughter and I solve mathematical tasks at home by ourselves. Everything else is good for me.
