MIHAIL MILEK: I WANT TO TEACH THOSE WHO REALLY LOVE THE SAXOPHONE

Michal Milek, 50, from Jerusalem
Musician, saxophonist, bandleader

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

My father insisted I learned playing the piano. I didn’t like the instrument, so abandoned it as soon as graduated.

However, I finally returned to music, but it was high time to play another instrument. I realized what I really needed after the military service. I entered the conservatory, having passed exams for the classes of percussion instruments. Once I came to a teacher who taught me how to play the saxophone. That’s when I became a saxophonist.

ON WORK

I prefer dealing with the most difficult things, so I chose the saxophone. Later, being in Germany I learned that the saxophone is not just an instrument, but a kind of a psychological weapon. It has positive impacts on one’s mind. No animal can listen to its sound, pets will run away of the performing saxophonist.

Despite starting to learn the sax late, I was playing quite good in the third year of my studies.

I performed four songs on the exam: the one played by The Jazz Crusaders, classical one and two David Sanborn’s, who later became my teacher. Actually, it’s not customary to applause at the exam, though I was applauded. The dean was quite surprised.

From 1996 to 1999 I studied in Weimar, Germany, where I was taught a classical school. There I got the DAAD scholarship.

From 1999 to 2002 I worked as a teacher in Jerusalem, which is my historic homeland.

I left it to continue my studies in California. Interestingly, the first six months of training children put their breath by inflating balloons. They’re not allowed to play the instrument.

I’ve been in Astana for 15 years. I came here from Moscow to perform at the President’s inauguration. He thanked me after the performance.

I was always interested in newly-born things. It’s very suitable to stay here, since I feel myself rather close to the source of the real emerge. In Astana I performed and helped those who wished to learn playing the sax.

I had the most unforgettable performance in Astana in the O'Hara pub. I was performing with "Saz Keruen" band and people were applauding us for seven minutes.

ON THE MAIN

I’ve got the most vintage saxophone, which is 58 years old; it’s a real piece of jewelry. I ordered it on eBay three and a half years ago and it has become my only friend since then.

I have my own special sound, which is supposed to be any musician’s main feature. If instrumentalist does not have his or her own recognizable sound, there is no point in performing at all.

Playing the sax often pulls me out of a sad state, I breath it in. Music is my love, my soul, my life.

Playing the sax burns 1000 calories in 5-6 minutes. Therefore, I try to eat healthily, sleep enough and drink herbal teas in order to be on game.

Whatever happens, a real musician must always be true to himself and do not abandon the instrument.

My main principle is to be punctual, for performances especially.

I always play with pleasure for those who are ready to listen, even if it's for free.

ON PLANS FOR FUTURE

Six years ago Tursun Niyazbaev and I organized the band called “Saz Keruen”, which played Kazakh music. The band has completely changed over the time. Personally, I could not play for a while, so the band finally stopped performing. Ex-participants are in other bands now; I didn’t manage to find a substitute, as the guys were real masters.

Now I, the keyboard player and the bass player are ready to find like-minded people and resume our creative work.

I dream of opening a vocational training school. I want to teach those who really love the saxophone.
