MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN KAZAKHSTAN: HOW THEY ARE MADE BY TRUE ARTISTS

We make wooden musical instruments, flute instruments in particular. We create different types of flutes spread all over the world. There are Indian bansuri, Kazakh pipes and pimaki.

I like the flute and like crafting, doing handmade things. I made the first flute 14 years ago after a year of experiments. There was no Internet tips, I had to work out how it would sound by myself.

All instruments are handmade, yet tools like drills, grinders, lathes, milling and laser machines are used to improve an instrument, help improve the quality of the ancient ethnic musical instrument on a new technological platform.

We make special-order instruments and have ready –make ones as well. The process of making takes 1-3 days.

It’s better to use the material growing in the place the instrument is being made. An Indian ethnic flute is made of bamboo, as it grows well there. In Kazakhstan we can make a flute of cane. Ancient flute - pimak - is made of pine, but it can be made of apple trees, the sound of which won’t be worse.

We make flutes from various materials, from plastic to bamboo. It all depends on the type of the instrument you’d like to have. Any musical instrument must have three features: it should sound good, look beautiful and be empirical, so that it can be passed on from generation to generation.

The flute is favorable in many cultures, such as Feng Shui. According to its principles, it’s not necessary to play it, just hang it wrapped with a red ribbon in the corner. It is believed to attract money and prosperity.

I make almost all types of Kazakh national musical instruments: dombra, kobiz, sherter, zhetigen. I’m self-taught: read, analyzed, restored old instruments, experimented a lot.

I made the dombra in 1969, being in the army. I made my military service in the Far East and there were guys from Kazakhstan. They were homesick, and we got the idea to make a dombra. After the army, I worked in the House of Culture, talked with musicians a lot, and this field interested me a lot.

Now I teach applied arts and artistic woodworking, dombra making at Abai Kunanbayev University. Many of my students are well-known and sought-after masters.

I’ve made more than 2000 dombras and about 200 copies of other instruments. I make special-order instruments for professional musicians, some of which are famous, so the requirements for them are very high. In the national academic orchestra named after Kurmangazy, all dombras were made by me. Practically all Kazakhstani professional artists play my dombra: "Ulytau” ensemble, "Turan", "Shalkima", "Muz Art" and many other artists.

One dombra making process can go from two weeks to six months. The period depends on the mood, inspiration, customer and material.

The Kazakhs used to make dombra of local trees. Usually dombras are made of coniferous trees - pine and larch. We make them of mahogany, maple, rosewood, etc.

The front part of the dombra is made of Tien-Shan spruce, which is the most acoustic material in Central Asia. 95% of musical data and instrument quality depend on the deck.

Unfortunately, we do not have special strings for dombra in Kazakhstan, we use fishing lines. Now we are trying to solve this problem. I’ve recently opened an experimental workshop at home, where a lot of new will be created. There we are to make our traditional strings of goat's guts. You can make strings for two or three dombras of one goat intestines. Dombras with real strings sound quite differently, a professional distinguishes such sound from the sound made by line.

The cost of dombra depends on material and skills of the master. The cost of my dombra starts at $800.

I continue my uncle Alexei Alekseyevich Pershin’s life work. I managed to continue his business, because I always was by him. I always watched what he was doing. He used to give me a tool and said to make an instrument, yet I didn’t take it seriously. When my uncle was busy with instruments, I was engaged in furniture making. He asked me to help him. When he got sick, he told me that had no apprentices. “I made kobyzes, now they sound in orchestras, all folk artists play on them, - he said.- But what will the next generation of artists play when I’m gone? " He was my godfather as well, so I said: "Ok, I’ll do it." He kept asking me for a long time if I was sure. And now I’m engaged in it. My uncle had been teaching me to treat decks and corps over the years.

The cost of a kobyz depends, first of all, on the material, on the wood. Instrument’s sound, timbre, color, sound, strength, purity are essential. The sound must be clean, mirrored.

Two or three kobyzes are made at a time. Three kobyzes making process takes about two and a half months.

Kobyz players competitions are usually held in Almaty and in Astana. Once the girls who had instruments made by me said that they took the second place. I asked who the winner was and they replied that it had been a girl owning a kobyz made by Alexey Alekseevich. It was fair.

The most crucial in kobyz creating process is to have patience, since you craft, grind with a small plane or a knife in your hands.

The first difficulty is to make a right dome, the second is to make an internal sample, observe the thickness, adjust the instrument, and then make a varnish so that it does not interfere with the sound and the instrument is beautiful. The whole process is complicated.

I have plans to make as many instruments as possible. I have not even thought about teaching, because I still have a lot to learn. There are some unknown subtleties occurring from time to time. I expect my eldest son to continue the work of my lifetime.
