Coffee with LINDA TAILLEUR PAQUET

ON ASTANA

We first arrived in Astana in September 2013. My husband and I were impressed by the cleanliness, organization and unusual architecture. It's nice to walk in the streets of Astana. Before coming here we worked in Qatar. Doha is a new capital, but it's not so easy to walk in the streets, as there are no sidewalks. I like wide paths for walking in Astana.

When my husband and I were given five places to choose, we first pointed out to Astana. We knew that it is a new capital, so we came to open the Canadian embassy, which had existed in Astana for only two years.

We’ve tried the Kazakh cuisine, yet most of the dishes we eat in local restaurants are Russian. We’ve tried koumiss, which taste was quite unexpected. I tried horse meat for the first time. It’s an interesting combination of tender and delicious meat which I really enjoyed. Horse meat isn’t popular in Canada.

As soon as my husband and I arrived, we wanted to get acquainted with national games. At Nauryz we hoped to see kokpar, but we did not meet anything like that. However, recently, on the way to Ereymanteau, we suddenly saw some residents play kokpar on the roadside. What an excitement it was to witness this unique sport.

We were at the concert of Kazakh instrumental music in "Tilep Kobyz Sarayy", which was one of the most beautiful and unique concerts we’ve ever seen

We were impressed by the orchestra, which performed traditional Kazakh music. The concert hall was in the shape of a wooden yurt-shaped amphitheater. Unfortunately, the interior of the hall was changed to accommodate it for a wider audience and was not so beautiful.

This is the tenth country we live in. Each country has its own way of influencing a person, and you get something useful from everywhere

Not having arrived, we knew nothing about Kazakhstan except some information taught at school. We did not know anything about real life here. Over the past year and a half, our horizons have expanded and we’ve found many new friends. Now we are preparing to return to Canada and want to take only good memories from our experience of living abroad, demonstrating openness to the various miracles of our world.

One of my favorite places in Astana is “Books and coffee”, where you can drink coffee and read books in English. They have a friendly staff, which I really like.

We were lucky to meet many friends thanks to Astana Outdoor Adventures (AOA). This is a group of tourists who gather every fortnight and travel on foot, discovering the remote corners of the country. We love walking tours in forests, steppes and hills. In summer we go camping in tents. We’ve already been to Ereimentau and Borovoe. We and our friends from AOA really like the local nature.

Last year, in April, my husband and I drove south by car. Along the way we decided to stop for a small picnic on Lake Balkhash, erected a tent and watched the sunset. It was amazing. Then we visited Almaty, and went to the Charyn canyon, which is magnificent. There was nobody there, except for a small film crew who were filming something. They were far away, so we stood alone at the top of the cliff. Then we decided to go down to the river. It was a pleasant pastime.

The next day we visited the Tamgaly and watched the petroglyphs. I did not expect that they would be so amazing. Reading about petroglyphs is different from seeing them, you can feel the real history. They are still in good condition, yet some of them are more than 4000 years old.

I recommend visiting these places, as they’re a treasure of the Kazakh people.
